The big band revival of a few years ago introduced a new audience of listeners to 40s-style swing music. Scat Cat is an opportunity for young bands to experience the fun and energy of this music. It features limited ranges and rhythms, with no solo responsibilities. It can also be successfully performed with a minimum instrumentation of four saxes, three trumpets, two trombones, piano, bass, and drums. Strive for good communication, especially in the rhythm section, to produce a driving, energetic feel with solid, unwavering time. While there are many slurs and articulations provided to help young players assimilate the style, there is no replacement for listening to accomplished groups performing this type of music. Benny Goodman's band featuring Gene Krupa on drums is a good place to start, but revival bands such as Big Bad Voodoo Daddy and Cherry Poppin' Daddies will also provide valuable performance clues.
About the FJH Developing Jazz Ensemble (Grades 2 – 2.5): Ideal for middle school jazz ensembles and smaller high school programs. Playable with as few as 4 saxes, 3 trumpets, 2 trombones, and rhythm section. Written solos are provided along with suggested parts for rhythm section and drum set. Guitar chord guide included.
