A major transition in pop music and culture became evident in the 1950's with the introduction of rock 'n' roll. The goal of this piece is to capture the essence of that wonderful time in our musical heritage. You will hear styles reminiscent of Jerry Lee Lewis, Elvis Presley, Fats Domino, and Bill Haley and the Comets, to name a few. There is an alto sax solo section with optional repeats to feature other instruments if desired. All solos are written out along with chord changes, so no improvisation is necessary (although encouraged). There's even an "a capella" section where horns imitate the popular doo-wop style of the era. Tempo is brisk and 8th notes should be played straight, without swing.
About the FJH Developing Jazz Ensemble (Grades 2 – 2.5): Ideal for middle school jazz ensembles and smaller high school programs. Playable with as few as 4 saxes, 3 trumpets, 2 trombones, and rhythm section. Written solos are provided along with suggested parts for rhythm section and drum set. Guitar chord guide included.
