Shuffle Stop is a medium-tempo blues in B-flat set over a shuffle groove and is playable in a range of tempos. Throughout the chart, players should carefully observe printed articulations and approach all rhythmic figures aggressively. The shuffle groove itself has many variations. Often, young drummers substitute a rock shuffle for this feel. While this may be exciting, an opportunity for students to learn an important style may be missed. There are many examples of this groove for students to listen to and absorb, like Blues in Hoss Flat (Count Basie), Don't Git Sassy and The Groove Merchant (Thad Jones and Mel Lewis), Party Time (Buddy Rich), and One by One (Art Blakey).
About the FJH Developing Jazz Ensemble (Grades 2 – 2.5): Ideal for middle school jazz ensembles and smaller high school programs. Playable with as few as 4 saxes, 3 trumpets, 2 trombones, and rhythm section. Written solos are provided along with suggested parts for rhythm section and drum set. Guitar chord guide included.
